The classic espresso affogato
Espresso poured over vanilla or fior di latte gelato. The espresso is dark, bittersweet and slightly viscous — chocolate, caramel and roasted-nut notes with a clean bitter finish.
It hits the gelato hot and dense, cutting through the sweetness with a coffee bite that lingers. This is the affogato most people picture first.
The matcha affogato
Ceremonial matcha, ground fresh and whisked with hot water into a bright green shot, then poured over vanilla gelato. The matcha carries grassy, vegetal and slightly sweet notes with a soft, umami-rich finish.
It’s a modern take on the same idea — but it drinks differently. Less bitterness, more brightness, more of a floral, spring-like character.
The flavor difference in one line
Espresso affogato tastes like roasted coffee and dessert. Matcha affogato tastes like green tea and dessert. Both taste unmistakably like affogato.
Who each one is best for
Order the espresso affogato if you want the classic — the traditional Italian preparation, big roasted flavor, or a strong after-dinner pick-me-up.
Order the matcha affogato if you love matcha lattes, want a gentler caffeine curve, are sensitive to acidity, or simply want the more Instagrammable option — the color is striking.
Why fresh-ground matcha changes the experience
Most matcha you drink was ground weeks or months ago. It’s already lost most of its aroma and much of its color. It tastes flat and can turn bitter.
We grind ceremonial matcha to order in front of you, then whisk it fresh. The flavor is dramatically brighter — sweeter, more umami, more aromatic. Guests who thought they didn’t like matcha routinely change their mind at the trailer.
